When Is the Best Time to Go?
The Milky Way core is visible from New Zealand between March and October, with the peak season running from May through August. These winter months bring longer nights, drier air and the galactic centre sitting high in the sky — perfect conditions for both viewing and photography.
Plan around the new moon for the darkest skies, and keep an eye on weather patterns. Canterbury and Kaikōura tend to have excellent clear night rates, while the West Coast offers dramatic landscapes when the skies cooperate.
